Using history for your Kent Garden Design

02/08/2013Garden DesignOutdoor Creations

When creating a new garden, you should always look at what is sitting around you, so think about creating history with your Kent Garden Design.

For many years, Kent has been named the Garden of England. This is due to its many orchards and hop gardens. In fact there are still hop gardens and orchards which exist within the county of Kent.

With a large amount of hop gardens, Kent also has many oast houses, these were used to dry hops in the past and many have now been transformed into unique homes. The oldest surviving oast house is in Cranbrook, near Tunbridge Wells and dates back to 1750. Oast houses stopped being working houses years ago as technology developed and people started using industrial units to dry hops. However, there is one oast house still preserved, situated at the Hop Farm in Beltring.

The county of Kent is a very large one, home to a population of almost two million people. This makes it the seventh highest population of any county in the UK. The county is very diverse, with very rich areas like Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells along with poorer areas in East Kent.

Living in Kent, many people find themselves under pressure to create a garden design worthy of being in the ‘garden of England’. There are also many public gardens within the county to be proud of, including Emmetts Garden and Charts Edge Garden. In fact, Kent has more stately homes and public gardens than any other region in the UK, with over two hundred gardens available for visiting.

Kent consists of natural beauty, which can give lots of inspiration for your garden. As nature is the ‘buzzword’, attracting wildlife to your garden is important. For this reason, you need to make sure you understand which plants will attract which kind of wildlife to your garden. You should also have some idea as to how you anticipate your garden looking at the end and the look you are trying to achieve. For example, do you want a traditional design, contemporary or natural? This will help your designer to understand how you visualise your garden.

If you are struggling to find inspiration, then contact us at Outdoor Creations. We have extensive experience in designing gardens and can help you to make your dream garden a reality. Contact us for Kent garden design, South East London, South West London, Surrey and Hampshire.
