If you stop and think about gardens you may have visited as a child, or even as an adult, what stands out the most? More often than not, it will be roses and symmetrical lawns – a traditional garden design.
Very often it is the case that when thinking about redesigning their garden, people will have traditional garden designs in mind. This is what many people consider to be an average garden including a mown lawn, trees and pretty colourful plants. However, what many people don’t realise is that this is considered to be a traditional design of which there are many different types. For example, you could have a formal design, informal or even a themed design.
Before you start redesigning your garden, think about what it is you want to change. What do you like about the design? What don’t you like? How much time will you be spending maintaining it? Of course, everyone wants a beautiful garden design, but if you don’t have the time to maintain it, then it can end up looking very shabby, especially in the Autumn/Winter time. However, if you have lots of time on your hands then you could probably have a more lavish design with lots of flowers incorporated. Even if you don’t have the time to maintain a lavish garden, it can still look beautiful, with the correct plants.
When they were originally created by the upper class, many years ago, traditional gardens were all about appearance. There was often a gardener on hand to maintain it, meaning the sky was the limit in terms of designs. They were often filled with statues, fountains and plants including roses. However, over the years, gardens have become much more ‘functional’, meaning that people like to enjoy using them as well as looking at them.
Of course, a traditional design doesn’t mean that you aren’t allowed to include modern features in your design. For example, one of Britain’s main summer hobbies is hosting a BBQ. Why not incorporate a BBQ into your design? This will instantly make it appear more ‘modern’. Similarly, you could look at new modern gardening techniques and incorporate these into your garden, such as rock gardens and modern water features.
