A lot has changed in the past fourteen years, since the turn of the century. There have been many inventions, changes in technology and new species have been founded meaning that landscape gardening has also changed significantly.
Trends in landscape gardening over the past fourteen years can be split into two different groups; ‘eco-friendly’ and ‘outdoor living’. There has also been clear overlaps between the two groups, for example some methods of eco-friendly landscaping can also be used for outdoor living and so on. So, let’s look in more detail at the different aspects of the two trends.
Eco-friendly landscaping has been important for a number of reasons over the years. Not only has there been concern about the ‘ozone’ layer, but also lack of rain has meant the need for hose pipe bans which has affected the trends as it has meant landscapers have had to be more considerate when designing and constructing gardens.
As expected, the hose pipe ban had a big effect on landscaping, with home owners using less water in the garden. This has meant that people have been less inclined to use big water features and are more likely to favour draught resistant plants, changing the overall look of the garden. Whilst the sound of water fountain can be soothing, more and more people are keeping water conservation in mind when planning their garden design.
Another big ‘eco’ change is the amount of people using ‘recycled’ items within the garden. This could mean recycled materials like old railway sleepers, or even making recycled furniture for the garden. Not only is recycled furniture good for the environment, but it’s also cost effective.
Outdoor living has become very popular over the years with more people wanting to host BBQ’s and dinner parties outdoors. Whilst most will still cook food inside, they will then bring the food outside to eat meaning that having an outdoor kitchen can enrich the outdoor dining experience. Outdoor kitchens have become increasingly popular, for those who have the space within their garden and are willing to use it often. An outdoor kitchen can include as much as you want it to, a grill, stove or even work surfaces, it depends how much you are going to use and how often. With an outdoor kitchen, you can ensure that you and your guests are dining in style.
What is the biggest change you have noticed over the last fourteen years in terms of landscaping?
