Patio vs Decking for your Garden Design?

23/09/2014Garden DesignOutdoor Creations

Designing your dream garden can be a very trying, tiring, inspiring and rewarding task to undertake. There are so many aspects to think of and an abundance of different features you could opt for. Your garden design should represent your individual personality and style.

There many things to consider when it comes to your garden design, such as your budget, the uses you want your garden to have, your style of your house, your desired materials and the size of your garden, to name just a few.

What you want out of your garden will directly affect the design of it. You need to think about what you will be doing in your garden. If you have an active family then maybe you would require a large lawn or if you like to entertain then maybe a large seating area would suit you best. If you are choosing to incorporate a seating area in your garden design then you then need to decide what type, decking or patio?

Just like anything, there are positives and negatives to consider before settling on a material and below we look into these:

Patio:

Patio’s are very durable, they can last for a long time and are easy to maintain. This is an extremely appealing factor to some people. Patio’s are also available in a huge variety of colours, meaning there is sure to be a shade to suit you and your garden design. Patio’s are versatile as they can be manipulated and cut in to almost any shape.

Decking:

Decking is very easy to install, with very little mess and fuss. It is also a reasonably priced material to use, obviously this is dependant on the wood you use. Decking is very visually pleasing and can work well within almost any garden design.

One downside to using decking as opposed to patio could be the fact that it is harder to maintain because the wood requires oiling to protect it from natural weathering. Therefore, it may not last as long as a patio.

The various points we’ve discussed above will have varying levels of importance to different people, depending on what’s essential to them.

The thing is bare in mind when deciding between decking or a patio for your garden design is what will work best for you and what will fit in with the design you are aiming to create.
