The Autumn and Winter bring nothing but rain and colder temperatures, both of these things do not make for perfect gardening weather. This week we are looking jobs that you can get on with in the winter without getting muddy and wet.
A good garden design needs planning and the earlier you start your plans the better, it’s a good time to sit down and work out what plants and flowers are going to go where so when the planting time comes you can focus on the planting rather than the planning ensuring come spring your garden is back to looking it’s best!
Another job that can be carried out is ensuring all your garden tools are clean for storage over the Winter, disinfect them by cleaning them in a weak solution. It is also a good time to take tools that made need sharpening to professionals to have them sharpened. Any mechanical equipment such as Rotavators, Mowers and Strimmers should also be checked to make sure they are in good working order ready for the next time they are to be used.
If you have a Greenhouse in your garden then now is a good time to clean it. Clean it from top to bottom ensuring all windows are dirt free and clean out any dead plants. Any pots that were used this year to grow from seed can be reused next year, it is also a good idea to disinfect these in a weak solution.
Also ensure your Greenhouse is ready for the strong winds that Winter will inevitably bring. Any cracked pains should be replaced, toughened glass is a great investment as it is much stronger than standard glass and will stand up a lot better during the strong winds. Also make sure any missing panes are replaced and any windows or doors are shut, any gaps within your Greenhouse means the wind can circulate through the Greenhouse causing even more damage.
So just because the sun isn’t shining doesn’t mean you can’t stay busy over the Winter with garden tasks.
