Decking is a great addition to any garden design, after spending a lot of money and time making it look good to improve your garden, you need to know how to look after it to keep it looking good and in great condition. Wooden decking is unfortunately susceptible to all weather be it wind, rain, snow or ice, which can have a large impact on it’s aesthetics and longevity. Ideally your decking needs to be cleaned and maintained once a year in order to prevent rotting and irreversible weathering. Here are some tips from us here at Outdoor Creations on how to clean and maintain your wooden decking.
Maintaining and Cleaning your wooden decking
After roughing it through the winter your wooden decking is likely to be looking a bit worse for wear. The decking is probably slippery, mossy and mouldy, in order to stop your wooden decking from rotting this needs to be thoroughly cleaned. Firstly remove any large bits of moss and mould with warm soapy water and a stiff brush and scraper. Once you have removed all of this, go over the wooden decking again with the stiff brush to remove all the now loose debris.
After the decking is clear of debris apply a wooden decking cleaner with a spray and scrub with a stiff brush until you feel the deck is completely clean. To finish, using a hose rinse all the leftover decking cleaner off with clean water, preferably a hose or pressure washer. Leave your decking to dry for a minimum of 2 days and next apply a protective coat all over the wooden decking.
If your wooden decking is still looking a bit tired even after a thorough clean the next step would be to stain it to give it a good new look. In that case before applying a protective coat as mentioned above, once the decking is dry apply a few coats of a wood stainer.
Other ways to maintain your decking involves fixing any broken parts and any soft bits of wood with new planks, sanding down any rough or splintering patches and driving any loose nails back into the wood in order to keep the decking safe.
Don’t let this put you off getting wooden decking, the short time it takes to maintain and clean your decking once a year is definitely worth the great addition it makes to any garden or outside space.
